For stairs, hard floors and getting under furniture, usually yes. The body stays on the floor and you carry only a light wand, so you can lift and angle it easily. Uprights are quicker over big, carpeted rooms but are harder to use on stairs. A cylinder body stays on the floor, so it takes more room to store than a stick. ### Should I buy a bagged or bagless cylinder vacuum cleaner? Bagged models such as the AEG 5000, Hoover H-Energy 300 and Bosch Series 4 seal the dirt in, so emptying is clean, which suits allergy sufferers. Bags typically cost a few pounds each, so budget for a pack or two a year. Bagless models cost nothing to run but release some dust when you empty the bin, and their filters need rinsing and drying for around 24 hours. ### Which cylinder vacuum cleaner is best for pet hair? Look for a turbo or motorised head that agitates hair out of carpet and stairs. The Vax Air Stretch Pet, Vax Pick Up Pet and Russell Hobbs Atlas2 Pet all include one. Larger bags or bins help, since pet hair fills a container faster than dust. ### Are cylinder vacuum cleaners good on carpet? Yes, if the head has a powered brush or a switchable setting. Budget models with a simple floor tool do fine on hard floors and low-pile carpet but struggle on thick pile. Check whether a turbo or motorised head is included. Without one, you will only get suction, not agitation. ### What size bin or bag do I need in a cylinder vacuum cleaner? Bins of 1.5L to 2.5L are common on bagless models and suit flats and small homes. For a family home or pets, a 4L to 6L bag means fewer stops. A bigger container weighs more, but you empty it less often. ### How much suction power do I need in a cylinder vacuum cleaner? Wattage tells you how much electricity the motor uses, not how well it picks up dirt. Since 2017 UK and EU rules cap motors at 900W, and a 700W model can outperform an 850W one. Compare on owner reports of pickup, and check cord length, hose length and noise, which range from around 72dB to 78dB here. ## How we ranked these ten Every score here comes from our ranking model, not from anyone's opinion. It weighs owner ratings by how many there are, how recent they are and how reliable they look, then factors in value. We compared 24 models for this guide before settling on these ten. Brands can't pay to be included or to move up. We last checked these picks in October 2026.
