Before you buy

Are heated throws worth it?

For sitting in one spot in the evening, yes. A throw warms you directly, so you can keep the central heating lower or off in the rest of the house. They are less useful if you move around a lot, or if you want a warm bed, where an under-blanket is the better type. The which-type hub at /home/electric-blankets/ compares the two.

Are heated throws cheap to run?

Most draw 100W or less on full power, though larger models can draw more, so check the label. At around 25p per kWh, 100W costs about 2.5p an hour, or about 10p for a four-hour evening. Most throws draw less once warm, so real costs are usually lower. Check your own tariff, as rates vary.

Is a heated throw better than an electric blanket?

They do different jobs. A heated throw is a loose blanket for the sofa or a desk, while an electric under-blanket lies under the sheet to warm the bed. Throws are portable and washable, and under-blankets usually cover a whole mattress with separate controls for each side.

Can you wash a heated throw?

Most can be machine washed at 30°C, but only after you unplug and detach the controller. Do not tumble dry unless the maker says you can; Dreamland, for example, states some models are tumble-dryer safe. Do not iron or wring them hard, as that can damage the wires. If the label says spot clean only, believe it.

Is it safe to leave a heated throw on?

Modern throws have overheat protection and an auto shut-off, usually after two to nine hours, and look for CE or UKCA marks. Do not fold or scrunch one while it is on, as that can create hot spots. Do not use one that is frayed, creased badly or has a damaged cord, and replace old ones. People with pacemakers should check with their doctor first.

What size heated throw should I buy?

The standard 120 x 160cm suits one person on a sofa or at a desk. If you want to share, look for around 130 x 180cm or longer, such as the ESTINGO or the Warmer here. Bigger throws weigh more, and the extra area takes longer to warm evenly. Fleece is light, while faux fur is heavier.

How we ranked these ten

Every score here comes from our ranking model, not from anyone's opinion. It weighs owner ratings by how many there are, how recent they are and how reliable they look, then factors in value. We compared 34 models for this guide before settling on these ten.

Brands can't pay to be included or to move up. We last checked these picks on 25 October 2026.
