Before you buy

Are fan heaters cheap to run?

Cost per hour is the heater's kilowatts times your unit price. A 2kW heater on full power uses 2kWh an hour, so at an example 27p per kWh it costs 54p an hour; check your own tariff, as unit prices change. A thermostat cuts this by switching the element off once the room is warm, so the real cost is lower in a small, well-insulated space.

What are the disadvantages of fan heaters?

The air warms quickly but cools quickly once the heater is off, so they suit short top-ups and not all-day heating. The fan is noisy on cheaper models, around 57dB on the loudest here, and the air can feel dry. Like any electric heater, a fan heater costs its kilowatts times your unit price for every hour it runs, so a 2kW model left on for hours adds up quickly.

What wattage fan heater do I need for my room?

A 2kW heater suits a small room of up to about 10 to 20 square metres. A rough guide is 100W per square metre, so treat a fan heater as a top-up rather than whole-room heating. A 3kW model suits a larger room.

Is a ceramic fan heater better than a standard one?

A ceramic (PTC) element reaches heat quickly, has less smell when it first warms up, and shuts itself down as it overheats. A plain metal coil heats quickly too but can smell of burnt dust and glow. Noise comes mostly from the fan, so a ceramic heater is not automatically quieter.

Is a fan heater or an oil-filled radiator better?

A fan heater warms a small room in minutes but cools fast once switched off. An oil-filled radiator takes longer but gives steady, silent warmth that lingers, so it suits a bedroom or all-day use; see our [oil-filled radiators guide](/home/electric-heaters/oil-filled-radiators/). Convector heaters are a third type, and our [electric heaters hub](/home/electric-heaters/) explains which type fits your room.

Is it safe to leave a fan heater on overnight?

No. Do not leave any fan heater running unattended or while you sleep. Look for a tip-over cut-out and overheat protection, keep it clear of curtains and bedding, and never dry clothes on it. Only use a heater with a suitable IP rating in a bathroom, and keep ordinary models out of wet zones.

How we ranked these ten

Every score here comes from our ranking model, not from anyone's opinion. It weighs owner ratings by how many there are, how recent they are and how reliable they look, then factors in value. We compared 25 models for this guide before settling on these ten.

Brands can't pay to be included or to move up. We last checked these picks on 25 October 2026.
