The affordable all-rounder. It is slim enough to leave out on the worktop, and the twist-on cups crush ice and frozen fruit better than its price suggests.

A 1200W motor with a 2.1-litre jug for family batches and a 700ml cup with a travel lid for single drinks. Three Auto-iQ programmes run the pulse and pause pattern for you.

The best-known personal blender, with a 900W base and an oversized cup. Owners use it daily for smoothies, sauces and ground nuts, and it is simple enough to rinse and go.

The cheapest here and the simplest. A 350W motor blends straight into a 600ml bottle with a leakproof lid, which is fine for soft fruit and milk.

A sensible family jug for little money. The 2-litre jug holds a 1.25-litre working load, and four blades deal with ice and soft fruit.

A plain, light jug blender at a budget price. The 1.9-litre jar and ProBlend blades cope with smoothies, sauces and soft fruit, and it is easy to store.

A strong 1100W motor in a compact base, with a 700ml cup for smoothies and a 400ml bowl with a built-in paddle for thick mixes. Owners like how it handles frozen fruit and nut butters without stalling.

A plain 400W jug blender at one of the lowest prices here. It handles soft fruit, milkshakes and sauces, and the jug is dishwasher safe.

A 1000W jug blender with a 1.6-litre jug and vented lid, suited to batches and soups. It is simple to run and strong on ice.

A glass-jug blender with five speeds and pulse, for people who want a jug that does not stain or hold smells. Good for soft smoothies, sauces and soups from cooled pans.
For daily smoothies, a personal blender with 700W or more is the easiest route: you blend and drink from the same cup, and it takes a minute to rinse. A jug blender is better if you make two or more servings at once. Frozen fruit and ice need more power than soft fruit and milk.
Under 500W suits soft fruit, milk and sauces. 600 to 900W handles ice and frozen fruit in small batches. 1000W and above deals with nuts, root vegetables and fibrous greens, and premium motors go further. Watts are only a guide: blade design and jug shape change the result.
Plastic is light and cheap, but it scratches and can hold odours or stain with turmeric and berries. Glass is sturdy and does not stain, but it is heavy and can crack if it is knocked. Tritan, used on many premium jugs, is a tough plastic that resists cracking and clouding better than basic plastic.
Most 600W and above models can crush ice, though some do it better than others. Add liquid first, then soft fruit, then ice, and use pulse in short bursts. Cheap 350W and 450W blenders are best kept for soft ingredients, and the bottle types are not made for heavy ice.
Pick a personal blender if you make one drink at a time, have little worktop space or want to carry the cup. Pick a jug blender for family batches, soups and sauces, since the jug is bigger and often has more speeds. Portable bottle blenders suit the gym or office, with less power than a larger jug model.
On most of the models here the jug or cup, lid and blades go in the dishwasher, but the motor base never does. For a quick clean, fill the jug a third with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid and run it for 30 seconds. In hard water areas, rinse promptly so scale does not build up around the blade seal.
Every score here comes from our ranking model, not from anyone's opinion. It weighs owner ratings by how many there are, how recent they are and how reliable they look, then factors in value. We compared 22 models for this guide before settling on these ten.
