Before you buy

Pod, bean-to-cup or manual espresso: which type should I buy?

Pod machines (Nespresso, Tassimo, Dolce Gusto) are the cheapest and easiest: drop a capsule, press a button, done. Bean-to-cup machines grind fresh beans automatically and taste noticeably better, but cost more and need cleaning. Manual espresso machines like the Sage Barista Express make the best coffee of all, and demand the most from you. Buy for the effort you'll actually put in, not the barista you imagine becoming.

How much do pods cost compared with beans?

Pods run 35 to 60p per drink. Beans work out at 15 to 25p per double shot for good speciality coffee, and less for supermarket beans. A two-coffee-a-day household saves roughly £150 a year with beans, which pays back the higher machine price faster than most people expect.

What does 15 bar or 19 bar pressure actually mean?

Espresso needs about 9 bar at the coffee itself; the higher numbers on the box describe the pump's maximum, not what the coffee receives. Ignore pressure claims above 15 bar as a buying factor. Grind quality and temperature stability matter far more, which is why machines with decent grinders dominate this list.

Do I need a milk frother?

Only if you drink lattes, cappuccinos or flat whites. Steam wands (Sage, De'Longhi manuals) make the best microfoam but need practice. Automatic systems like Philips LatteGo froth at a button press and clean easily. If you drink your coffee black, skip milk features entirely and put the money into the coffee side.

How often do coffee machines need descaling?

In hard-water areas, roughly every 4 to 8 weeks; soft water can stretch to 3 months. Most machines on this list warn you when it's due. Skipping it is the single biggest cause of early machine death, and limescale damage usually isn't covered by warranty.

How do you decide the rankings on this page?

Scores come from our confidence-weighted model built on owner ratings, weighted by recency, volume and reliability. Brands can't pay for placement, and affiliate earnings have no input into scores. See our methodology page.

How we ranked these ten

Every score here comes from our ranking model, not from anyone's opinion. It weighs owner ratings by how many there are, how recent they are and how reliable they look, then factors in value. We compared 78 models for this guide before settling on these ten.

Brands can't pay to be included or to move up. We last checked these picks on 27 July 2026.
